Gradients
Fast down, slow up. Gravity is sometimes your friend.
Dragging a ton and a half of car up a hill is not an easy task – thats why you have to use more fuel getting up hills.
If you can see a hill coming up then why not speed up slightly before it – then allow your speed to decay when going up the hill. You will avoid the fuel penalty of trying to maintain your speed up a hill but without hitting the top of the hill at 10 miles an hour.
If you are going downhill then consider letting your speed rise as little extra fuel will be required as gravity is working with you rather than against you. Back off when on the flat again (or going up the next hill).
Use the topology of your route and drive to the road.
