Remove luggage racks and boxes
If it is not in use then don’t leave roofbars and boxes fitted.
Roof bars and car roof boxes cripple a cars areodynamics. No matter how hyped up the roof box is, they all destroy a cars ability to slip through the air.
If your car is particulary areodynamically efficient then this effect can be very pronounced, especially at cruising speeds – something like a nice slipery Honda Hybrid Prius can loose up to 40% of its effective mpg if you strap a huge roof box on it and take it on an extended motorway journey. If you have to use one then fair enough but remove it as soon as possible and never undertake a journey with it on unless you really have to.
If you find yourself using one often then it might be time to ask yourself “have I got the right car” – maybe you might need a hatchback or estate car or maybe more of a people carrier. It is pointless buying a car that has great mpg on paper but then strapping a top hat to it all the time and wondering why your mpg is so awful.
