Hypermilling – Saving Fuel

Tyres

Keep your tyres up to pressure.
You can make improvements to your fuel economy of as much as 3.5% just by keeping your tires inflated to the correct pressures. If your tyres are lower than the recomended values you can loose 0.3% for each 1 psi drop in pressure on all four of your tires. This is especially important if you are off on holiday with a car full of screaming kids and luggage – check your manual and ensure your tyres are inflated to the correct pressures for your actual loading (and remember to remove some air after the journey).
Do not, whatever you do, over inflate your tyres thinking for each psi of increase you will make a saving. The benefits tail off rapidly and are overtaken by the risks. The main risk being the loss of your life in a fireball of twsited metal. Over inflated tyres will damage the handling, stability and braking capability of your car.
Over (or under inflated) tyres wear out more quickly – an over inflated tyre will wear out rapidly in the middle and become illegal. A few pennies of fuel savings is not going to outweigh the cost of fitting four new tyres or the fine for runing on bald tyres.
Properly inflated tires are safer and last longer.
